BIG ANNOUNCEMENT about Bixby's Bar & Grill.
Sometime in the next 6 Months we will be closing down the Bixby Website. It has been a helluva ride and lots of fun, but all things have their time and place. Not to worry, Kathy & I will still be organizing and hosting events. We are just going to go about it differently and probably a bit more low key. Some of you are probably wondering why so I will outline some of our thought process on this. (1) I set up the site in 2007 to help plan our Poker League and use the site to post and host Poker games along with signup. It quickly became a site for us to post and host board game nights. Since 2007, the site has grown to be many more things and have many more uses. (2) The site is hosted by GoDaddy as back in the day they offered a quick 1 click install and economical hosting fees. Since that day, their fees have gone up considerably and their services have gone way down. Often they are not able to resolve an issue and simply deny any culpability at their end. I am done with using their services and the close to $800/year when all fees are tallied is just a bit ridiculous. (3) I am non-technical and do not want the hassle of trying to migrate the site to another hosting service. The site is built using Simple Machine Forums (SMF) and I have nothing but praise for their software and the support of the SMF Developers and Community. (4) Community is important to me and I take on too much. This includes bulk order planning, helping others liquidate their game collections, documenting trips, travel guides, recipes, Disc Golf info, and more in case others have an interest. Planning all of our board game nights in an open all-can-see and sign up manner, and a host of mini-CONS and gatherings. It is all a fair bit of work. When I contrast that to how normal people plan things it is a bit overwhelming. (5) Our local community is strong and does not need this stewardship. There are lots of game nights and events being planned and hosted by folks here that involve smaller, more intimate groups. Kathy & I are going to follow suit and go that route. Not everything we do has to be planned and executed in a fish bowl. 🙂 (6) Kathy is retired and my work commitments are somewhat diminished so we want to take a step back from the obligations of running the site and all of the work that entails. (Lots of screen time). We are excited to explore additional free time and what that might mean for us. (7) We are going to continue to host game nights, Formula De League Nights, and BSOP Poker Nights. We are going to continue to plan and host mini intimate CONS and gatherings. We are just going to go about it differently to reduce the admin burden. The site is not going away anytime soon, but I urge you to copy/ paste any info that you find useful. Kathy & I will be copying info to documents for our personal use going forward. We are not sure what we will use going forward for planning events, our current front-runner is to revert to using email lists for events and invites. Stay tuned as we explore options. If you have ideas, please reach out to me. It has been a helluva ride. Thanks for being part of it. Stay tuned for the next evolution of how we plan things. Thanks Forums.Bixby.Ca, you gave us 17 great years of planning!
